China-Asean Strategic Partnership sets new course for cooperation, prosperity

Today is a big day in the history of China-Asean relations. On October 8, 2003, leaders of China and Asean countries gathered in Bali, Indonesia and put their signatures to the Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity. China thus became the first dialogue partner to have a strategic partnership with Asean.

The board of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) is meeting in South Korea this week to discuss ways of opening up much of Asia, plus Australia and New Zealand, to totally free trade within 15 years, the deputy director-general of the Foreign Trade Department said yesterday.
